Digital Skills Training for Construction and the Trades

A new initiative aimed at helping construction industry professionals and tradespeople with IT and digital skills is starting to take off.

Colchester Institute, who deliver a multitude of construction and trades training as part of its further and higher education curriculum, has launched a project which aims to equip those in the industry with the digital skills needed for this day and age.

Whilst the shortage of skilled workers in construction is well-documented, the sector is also facing issues with the digital literacy and proficiency of an ageing workforce.

It has already been identified that the development of more innovative and digital services is one of the biggest challenges facing the construction sector.

Contractors, developers, and tradespeople who fail to keep pace with digitalisation may soon run the risk of being left behind.

Richard Cutter, Project Manager for Digital Construction Skills, is leading the project for the College and recognises the challenges facing those in the industry.

"For those who grew up using modern devices, the transformation isn't as much of an issue as they have been immersed with digital technology since childhood. However, for those who started their careers before this technology existed or was commonplace, it can be a struggle to get to grips with.

"Post-COVID, we live in an increasingly collaborative and remote working environment, however, many in the industry are now being asked to communicate via platforms and channels they have minimal experience of.

"Our aim is to ensure construction firms and sole construction tradespersons are not missing out on the benefits of digitalisation. We want to help them reduce the risks of falling behind and losing out on future contracts/work.

"This initiative has allowed us to provide free bespoke training and guidance packages, including how-to and step-by-step resources to small and medium-sized construction companies, delivered in a way that suited them, whether it was delivered online, in-person onsite or at one of our campuses."

There is no doubting the potential of digital tools and software to improve delivery and efficiency in the industry.

The adoption of standard industry digital practice and a universal employee digital skillset is a long way from being realised, however Colchester Institute is working hard to change this.
