SUPPORTING FAMILIES IN THE COMMUNITY WITH AUTISTIC CHILDREN

Chelmsford City Racecourse continues to support their local community with its commitment to being inclusive across a diverse sector, by recognising the needs of visitors and local charities.

With the summer school holidays upon us and parents seeking great days out, it becomes particularly challenging for families with children who have special needs, therefore for the third year the racecourse is hosting an Autism in Racing family friendly raceday on August 6th. Offering complimentary tickets to families with children diagnosed with autism, and plenty of entertainment to keep the little ones amused, this event promises a great day out for everyone.

Proud to partner with POP Essex, Rhino UK and charities who provide advice and a support network in the autism community, they are excited to offer an interactive sensory room, soft play area, quiet zone and numerous additional sensory activities. This exclusive, non-judgmental space will provide children with a dedicated zone away from the crowds to fully enjoy the experience.

Children can also enjoy watching the horses parade in the Parade Ring or racing home on the final bend from private garden areas, where families can relax and soak up the atmosphere, including a Shetland Pony race to kick off the day’s entertainment.

In addition they are also helping to fundraise for their partner POP Essex, a local charity who provides stay and respite play sessions for children with special needs in Braintree and the surrounding areas. Their experience with working with children and the support they provide on the day is fundamental in delivering this opportunity for autistic children.

With triple the guests expected compared to last year, and following their recognition as finalists in The RCA Awards 2023 and the Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards 2024 for their community work, the racecourse is creating a lasting legacy of support for local residents and charities across Essex and beyond.

So far this year they have supported unpaid carers, volunteered at The Wilderness Foundation, collaborated with and supported The Presidents Sporting Club charity hosting an educational day at the racecourse for a class of children with special needs. They have also provided complimentary tours for a Brownie group, Pony Club and the Essex Young Farmers. Additionally they are planning their second Remembrance Raceday in support of the Armed Forces, and will be hosting a coffee morning for members of the community suffering from Dementia, with more community engagement and fundraising events planned for the rest of this year.

Jo Flaherty, Head of Charity & Community at Chelmsford City Racecourse, added, "Giving back is crucial, and we take immense pride and remain committed to supporting and engaging with our local community, by forming strong relationships with disadvantaged groups and local charities. We can provide a platform to give them an opportunity to raise their profile to a national audience, and we are particularly proud of our 'Autism Raceday witnessing the joy it brings to families facing significant challenges daily. It is also a privilege to work with such a dedicated team who work tirelessly to ensure the success of these events.”
