Thames Freeport has launched the Exceptional Scholarship Programme, a major new initiative to support talented young people in Thurrock and help them take the next step toward fulfilling their ambitions.
Funded by Thames Freeport’s partners—Forth Ports, and DP World, the scholarship programme is designed to remove financial barriers for hard-working students at The Gateway Academy in Grays, opening up opportunities in higher education, apprenticeships, and vocational training.
Thames Freeport is passionate about investing in local communities. As new businesses, jobs and investment come to the area, Thames Freeport is determined to ensure that young people from local schools have every chance to be part of that success story. The Exceptional Scholarship Programme is a key part of this commitment—creating real opportunities for young people to thrive, no matter their background.
In total 25 Year 11 students were awarded a truly once-in-a-lifetime scholarship, designed to support them not only through their college years but also as they prepare for future careers.
The scholarship aims to provide ongoing support with educational costs, helping to ease the transition to further education and beyond. To celebrate this incredible opportunity, students took part in an unforgettable day in London. The experience included a visit to the iconic Shard, where they enjoyed breath-taking views of the city skyline, and a special meal to mark the occasion.
As a bonus, each student was gifted a brand-new outfit, selected to support them as they step confidently into their future endeavours — whether for college interviews, work experience placements, or other exciting opportunities that lie ahead. This inspiring initiative is not only a celebration of their hard work and potential but also a valuable investment in their future success.
“The Thames Freeport Scholarship is supporting me in so many aspects of my life. The opportunity to experience The Shard was amazing. The workshop that was delivered really benefited the way I approach and speak to people in a professional and formal manner. This trip also helped to encourage my future goals in life and to never give up. The day has given me many memories of the working world that I will never forget." Max Alabi - Year 11 Student.
“I truly thank The Thames Freeport for granting me this opportunity and for believing in me—that I was worth being provided this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” Treasure Ogu - Year 11 Student.
“I feel extremely grateful for the opportunity given to me by the Thames Freeport Scholarship Programme and The Gateway Academy. Although I’ve visited London before, this trip helped me view it from a different perspective—particularly visiting The Shard. The workshop on developing our presentation skills was an excellent experience and will prepare me for sixth form and university.” Mikayla Esseku -Year 11 Student
