On a bright winter’s day in Chelmer Valley, the Essex Forest Initiative organised a successful tree planting event, bringing together local leaders and Essex County Council officers in a collective effort to enhance our environment.
The event saw the enthusiastic participation of Councillor Peter Schwier, Essex County Council’s Climate Czar and Cabinet Member for Environment, Waste Reduction and Recycling alongside dedicated officers from the Environment and Climate Action team.
Over two days 1000 trees, which were a diverse mix of alder, oak and willow, were planted at the site. These trees will be a beautiful addition to the landscape that will also play a crucial role in surface water management, carbon sequestration and promoting biodiversity.
The Essex Forest Initiative, launched in October 2019, aims to plant 375,000 trees over five years, covering 150 hectares—equivalent to the size of 210 football pitches. This ambitious project is designed to lock up carbon, improve air quality, encourage biodiversity, and reduce flooding. So far, the initiative has exceeded its targets, planting over 475,000 trees and creating 100 hectares of new woodland.
Councillor Schwier expressed his gratitude to all participants, highlighting the importance of such initiatives in combating climate change and generating community engagement. The Essex Forest Initiative continues to lead the way in environmental stewardship inspiring others to take action and make a positive impact on their local area.
