Farleigh Hospice is recruiting a new Chair

Farleigh Hospice is looking to recruit a new volunteer Chair of its Board of Trustees.

The charity - which is based in Chelmsford - provides specialist palliative and end of life care to adults affected by life-limiting illnesses, and support to bereaved children and adults, across mid Essex.

Farleigh’s vision is that ‘everyone facing the end of their life is supported to live well and die well’. As well as easing pain and bringing comfort, the hospice helps people to have a good quality of life and to do the things that matter most to them with the time they have left.

The overarching responsibility of the Chair is to provide leadership and direction to the Board of Trustees, who are responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of Farleigh Hospice. This includes developing the organisation’s aims, objectives and goals in accordance with the charity’s governing document, legal and regulatory guidelines.

The Chair works in partnership with Farleigh’s Chief Executive to ensure that trustee decisions are acted upon and the hospice is managed in an effective manner.

The current Chair, Keith Spiller, has been a volunteer trustee of the charity for nearly nine years, which is the maximum term, and so he is stepping down later this year. Farleigh Hospice is looking to recruit his successor now to give sufficient time for a smooth, phased handover of the role to the successful applicant.

Keith said, “As well as providing excellent care, Farleigh Hospice is also a fundraising organisation with many facets to manage, from buildings, staff and retail stores to a subsidiary lottery company. Therefore, there is not one particular skillset that is essential for the role of Chair.

“We are looking for someone who is passionate about developing the hospice and steering it through the challenges that charities are facing in the near-term, while looking ahead to plan where Farleigh will be in future.

“This is a very rewarding volunteer role and I would encourage anyone interested to find out more.”
