Colchester Zoo hosts Saving Species Day

The Environment and Climate Action Communications Team and the Active Travel Team joined the Saving Species Day event at Colchester Zoo on Wednesday 29 May as part of 'Love Your Zoo Week.'

The event featured organisations from across the conservation world who came together to showcase their work to over 5000 local residents and visitors. Throughout the day, the team spoke with residents and families about actions which we can all take to protect the future of our planet and our wildlife.

Visitors were also able to learn more about how we can swap our cars for more sustainable travel options, such as walking and cycling. The team signposted visitors to the wealth of resources which Essex County Council has launched to help us all take action on reducing our carbon footprint, such as the Carbon Cutting Essex app and the Climate Action Advice Packs.

Families were able to take part in various educational activities on the stand such as ‘match the animal to the paw print’ card game and have a go at riding the Sustainable Travel Team’s bike.

From 1 January 2025, Colchester Zoo will become a charitable trust known as Colchester Zoological Society. To celebrate the work which they do, they will be hosting a number of events across 2024 to highlight their work in saving species and habitats across the UK and abroad. You can keep up to date on upcoming events by visiting Colchester Zoo’s web page.
