In today’s shifting economic landscape, clarity from government is always welcome - especially when it affects the way businesses invest in talent.
For employers in Essex who depend on apprenticeships to develop future leaders, the latest announcement on Level 7 apprenticeship funding provides exactly that.
The government has confirmed key changes that will come into effect from 1 January 2026, offering a critical window for planning and action.
What’s Changing and Who It Affects
From 2026, government funding for Level 7 apprenticeships - equivalent to a master’s degree - will only apply to:
- Young people aged 16 – 21
- Individuals under 25 who are care leavers or have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)
For all others, funding will no longer be available. However, any learner who begins their Level 7 apprenticeship before 1 January 2026 will be fully funded through to completion, regardless of age or background.
What Essex Employers Should Do Now
If your organisation currently supports, or plans to support, learners through Level 7 programmes, now is the time to act:
- No immediate change for 2025: Apprentices starting before the 2026 cut-off date will remain fully funded.
- Plan for progression: If you have Level 4 apprentices nearing completion, prioritise their progression to Level 7 before the deadline to secure funding.
